WHY TRAIN WITH US?
The CTPS was one of the first secondary Schools Direct teacher training providers on the South Coast and we are an established and experienced secondary teacher training provider. Centred in Fareham we liaise with education providers in the surrounding areas to the benefit of all schools and young people.
We are able to offer a variety of school experiences including Special School provision and work closely with the University of Winchester in developing teacher trainees academically and vocationally. Our students are truly comprehensive and trainees are guaranteed to given the opportunity to work students from different backgrounds and origins. You will be awarded a PGCE (Secondary) 11-18 at the end of the programme and will benefit from an experienced team of mentors in school and at the University to ensure that you make the very best progress over the course of the year meaning that you are best prepared for the challenges and opportunities of taking up a full time position in your first post as an Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).
Most weeks you will spend 4 days in schools developing your knowledge and understanding and how students learn and given the chance to practice your own pedagogy and style under the guidance of an experienced mentor. Most Fridays are spent away from the classroom either in a neighbouring school in the partnership or the University. On such days you will be given time to explore an educational theme or topic and relate it to your own ongoing practice. To begin with you will be given a small number of classes to focus on and develop particular strategies and skills; only when the mentor thinks you are ready will you be given more classes and challenges as you move towards that Qualified Teacher Status.
Anyone already in education will tell you that teaching is one of the toughest jobs out there. It's also one of the most rewarding. To make sure you’re a successful and confident teacher in the 21st-century, we have devised a vibrant programme informed by research and constantly reviewed to ensure students are equipped with the most up-to-date developments in primary education.
Our passion is to provide you with a university experience that immerses you in the theory and practice of teaching. You will love studying at our beautiful campus where your lecturers know you by name, helping you to develop the confidence you need to be an outstanding teacher and make a real difference in the world.
The course prepares you to teach across the age ranges 11-16 and is structured around six modules - a combination of taught modules based at the University and placement modules based in schools or educational settings.
You will undertake studies in all elements of secondary education; extend your knowledge of learning and teaching, of the breadth and scope of the curriculum and the professional skills associated with high-quality teaching. You will then apply these areas of understanding and skill to classroom practice throughout the year, including during two assessed placements in schools or educational settings.
